As a member of the band Sidewalk Fiction, there was always a strong desire to create an animated music video. The opportunity came with the release of the band's debut album Modern Smoke Signals. Strong imagery in the song's lyrics created the concept for the video while the aesthetic look came about during the writing and recording process. "Hillside" is very much the tragic story of the chance at love, told through hand illustrations of paper children.

The film is based on a series of changing patterns generated by a computer program using the Java. The patterns evolve from one into another based on mathematical rules or algorithms. The sequence of images where then captured as single frames and further enhanced and manipulated using Adobe After Effects. A sound track was composed using open source sound loops and the changing images synchronized to a music track. The films attempts to visualize sound.
